While you were looking up during last weekend’s #NorthernLights, ONC’s deep-sea observatories were recording this temporary distortion of Earth’s magnetic field! Compasses connected to ONC’s subsea observatories in the Pacific and Atlantic, some at depths of up to 2.7km recorded this rare phenomena. ONC Scientific Data Specialist Alex Slonimer took note of this unusual data during quality control checks. With further review, he discovered that the magnetic distortions, ranging as far as +30 to -30 degrees, were tied to peaks to the #AuroraBorealis. ONC is recruiting a Machine Learning/ AI Specialist for a 2-year, grant funded position. This newly created position is based at ONC's Queenswood facility at the University of Victoria. Closes May 30. The #MachineLearning / AI specialist focuses on advancing #AI applications in ocean sciences. They will be responsible for delivering a comprehensive summary of the current state of AI in ocean sciences, developing a hydrophone anomaly and feature detection model, and organizing a national workshop aimed at fostering a community of practice around ocean AI work in Canada. The associate should have a high degree of programming skills with proficiency in Python and MATLAB, High Performance Computing (HPC) environments and shell scripting, and Version control systems, especially git. ONC’s land+seafloor seismic network provided more than 1 minute’s notice of incoming ground shaking from a small offshore earthquake early this morning – the second successful earthquake notification during the current #EmergencyPreparednessWeek! Watch the video to see the 3.9M earthquake, located offshore 168 km SW of #PortAlice, this morning at 4:44 AM PDT. Critical infrastructure subscribers in Vancouver received 64 seconds’ notice. Victoria received 61 seconds. ONC is committed to maximizing safety for coastal communities through its data products that detect most offshore earthquakes first due to proximity and rapid on-site processing, as well as through its tsunami detection oceanographic radars, and inundation mapping services.
