We use technology, knowledge and passion to empower Canadians with disabilities.
About us
The Neil Squire Society has been revolutionizing the lives of Canadians with disabilities since 1984 through accessible assistive technology. Our organization was established when 21-year-old Neil Squire was left a brain-stem tetraplegic after a car crash. Seeing he was unable to speak or move his arms and legs, Neil’s family and a group of professionals in Vancouver created a ground-breaking device allowing him to communicate by using his breath to type Morse code. The technology was rudimentary at the time but it reconnected Neil to the world, allowing him to speak with family and friends once again. After Neil passed, the small but mighty group formed the Society in his name to keep improving the lives of people with disabilities. Speaking to a loved one. Checking email. Maintaining or finding a new job. Since Day One, our mandate hasn’t changed—we believe people of all abilities should have the opportunity to live, work and play without barriers. We are the Canadian leader in Assistive Technology, from innovation right through to trialing and implementation. We create affordable assistive technology devices that give people with disabilities greater control over their lives. We also offer immersive programs that teach people with disabilities how to use technology and succeed both at home and in the workplace. We are a partner of choice for government and industry decision-makers who share our passion for making Canada more accessible for all. Together, our work enables people with disabilities to achieve their goals, reach their full potential and continue living life to the fullest. #DigitalLiteracy #Employment #AssistiveTechnology #Innovation

“[I feel] much less pain throughout the day,” Andrew explains. “[It’s] easier to walk on [my] right foot.” #WorkBCATS
Andrew works full-time at a grocery store in Victoria, where his tasks include pulling skids, loading milk trays, stocking fridges, as well as directing other employees. He has post-surgery right arm weakness, as well as right foot drop, making his job difficult at times. Through WorkBC Assistive Technology Services, Andrew received a right foot orthosis. “[I feel] much less pain throughout the day,” he explains. “[It’s] easier to walk on [my] right foot.” Andrew says he “absolutely” recommends WorkBC Assistive Technology Services to others in need. He noted that since receiving his orthotics, he had recently received a promotion at work to department manager. “I would absolutely recommend the Assistive Technology Services program to others, and I’m extremely grateful for the help.” #WorkBCATS
Cass is a professional musician, who recently trained to become a technical animator in the film industry. She is currently looking for work as a technical animator, and she is also doing paid gigs as a musician. "[I was] diagnosed with genetic hearing loss in the lower-to-mid frequencies. It affects my ability to distinguish speech and pitch,” she shares. “I was in school from 2021 to 2023, and I found I had to strain to understand the instructors. I frequently had to ask them to repeat themselves. [. . .] This would be a major barrier in an industry where collaboration and effective communication are essential." “Through the Assistive Technology Services program, I received the financial support to purchase excellent hearing aids,” she says. “The most immediate improvement was my ability to hear pitch and speech. I didn't understand how profoundly isolating my hearing loss had become. I can now move forward with my job search with renewed energy and confidence."
