Building strength, stability and independence through affordable homeownership
About us
Habitat for Humanity Victoria is a registered charity that brings communities together to help families build strength, stability and independence through affordable homeownership. Through volunteer labour, efficient management and tax-deductible donations of money and materials, Habitat for Humanity builds safe, decent and affordable houses alongside the future homeowner. Each family invests 500 hours of volunteer service with Habitat Victoria. Habitat houses are sold to qualified families at fair market value and are financed with affordable, no-interest mortgages. The homeowners' monthly mortgage payments go into a revolving fund, which is used to build more homes.

A big thanks to RESCON in Ontario and Habitat for Humanity GTA for this excellent article urging the provincial and federal governments to take the next step on addressing housing affordability by extending the HST/GST exemption now in place for purpose-built rental to also include non-profit affordable ownership homes delivered by organizations like ours at Habitat for Humanity Victoria. #bcpoli #housingsupplycrisis #gst Ene Underwood

Spoke with #CBCVancouver on Friday about our exciting new affordable homeownership project. Had time to touch on the need for affordable homeownership in general but ran out of time and wanted to expand on that point. Begin rant: When talking about the housing crisis, a lot of attention has been focused on accelerating much-needed purpose-built rental housing which is a very good thing. But here's what's not good: without also creating meaningful pathways to homeownership, there is a risk of dividing Canadians into a permanent rental class and an ownership class. If all we're building are rental properties and not also building affordable homes to own, we're bottlenecking the housing continuum and bringing this split to life. Is this happening? Yes, take a look at the current construction activity here in Victoria where all the cranes in town are building rental projects only. As for talk about generational fairness, I'd suggest that fairness also means that younger generations should have the same opportunity to realize all the benefits of home ownership as previous generations. The hardest part of building affordable housing is financing the projects. We’ve been trying to partner with federal and provincial governments to create actions to meaningfully bridge the gap between rental and ownership, and frankly, they need to step up. Why, for example, is low-cost financing, relief from GST, access to government surplus land, in place for rental housing but not available for non-profit affordable ownership homes? Billions of dollars for rental construction, zero for homeownership affordability measures. Where does the economic benefit and invested public money ultimately rest after government funding for rental development vs. non-profit affordable homeownership projects? I'm not deriding the important role of landlords in housing, but as public policy why are we exclusively enriching only landlords and REITs and not working families? Why can't we find a balance to help both? https://lnkd.in/grebdNbK #AffordableHousing #housingforall #affordablehomeownership #housingcrisis #solutions #bcndp #bcunited #bcconservatives #affordableoptionsbc #LPC #CPC #NDP #Victoria #Saanich #BCbuilds
