In 2022, the International Maritime Organization launched #WomenInMaritimeDay, which takes place annually on May 18th. The day highlights the importance of empowering women in the maritime sector and celebrates their invaluable contributions to the industry and our global community. Despite progress toward gender equality in the maritime industry, women remain underrepresented. Promoting the recruitment, retention, and sustained employment of women in the maritime sector is critical to our future. This year’s theme focuses on the crucial role of women in ensuring maritime safety worldwide while highlighting the changing attitudes toward gender in the industry. Today, we celebrate all of the incredible women at #BCFerries and #WomenInMaritime across the globe who are shaping the future of maritime safety. Thank you for your dedication and leadership. #BCFerries is proud to support the Moose Hide Campaign, an Indigenous-led movement focused on ending gender-based violence. We're joining thousands of Canadians wearing pins today to support #MooseHide Campaign Day and our commitment to reconciliation and safe communities. The #MooseHideCampaign is grounded in Indigenous ceremony and traditional ways of learning and healing. Wearing the moose hide pin signifies a commitment to honour, respect, and protect the women and children in your life and speak out against gender-based and domestic violence. The movement started in BC over 10 years ago and has distributed over 4 million campaign pins across Canada. To learn more about the movement and events you can livestream or attend today in City of Victoria BC, visit 👇 https://lnkd.in/g5AMF5VN

#BCFNews As the busy summer travel season approaches, #BCFerries customers will have more access to menstrual supplies, all-gender washrooms, and more accessible signage. We've joined the United Way British Columbia #PeriodPromise which aligns with our commitment to expand the availability of no-cost menstrual products on our ferries and at our terminals, including now in all our all-gender washrooms. Over 300 public and employee single-use washrooms, both on ships and at shore facilities, will be converted by the end of this fiscal year. In response to customer feedback, we’re also enhancing accessibility on every vessel with the introduction of new Braille washroom signs. By introducing these initiatives, we are reaffirming our dedication to advancing accessibility and inclusivity while continually enhancing customers’ travel experience. Happy #EarthDay! 🌎 As one of the largest passenger ferry operators in the world, we’re focused on continuously working towards more sustainable and cleaner operations. Recently we announced we will be building four more Island Class ferries that we plan to operate exclusively using renewable electricity. These new ships will bring our total number of hybrid-electric Island Class ferries in service to 10. These four new ships are estimated to reduce emissions by 10,000 tons of CO2 equivalent, supporting the Province’s CleanBC goals and bringing #BCFerries closer to its 2030 targets. Shoreside, we’re replacing #BCFerries vehicles that retire with EVs. Our electric shore-side vehicles use approximately 70% less energy and have zero tailpipe emissions.   The theme for Earth Day this year is “The Planet vs Plastics”. Waste reduction and reducing single use plastic consumption is something we’re working on too. Our waste reduction efforts last year diverted thousands of items from BC landfills including approximately 7,700 lights, nearly 300 electronic waste items like printers and monitors, and more than 10,000 kilograms of batteries. On the horizon - this June, hundreds of our people will take part in the Shoreline Cleanup. In four years, #BCFerries teams throughout the coast have removed more than 6,000 kilograms of debris from our coastal shores.   Let’s keep working together to protect this stunning place that we’re privileged to call home. #BCFerries #EarthDay2024

#BCFNews Our unionized team members are set to receive a one-year 7.75% general wage increase, with many jobs receiving extra “special increases” including some licensed mariners receiving up to an additional 10%. These new wages better reflect the significant daily contributions of our people and more closely align with compensation standards across the industry. The settlement is retroactive to October 1, 2023. “We know wages haven’t kept up for our people and that more was needed for us to get back to being an employer of choice. I’m grateful to our people for the patience they demonstrated over the last few months.” - Nicolas Jimenez, our President and CEO. We proactively agreed to re-open wage negotiations six months earlier than required in order to start to address wage disparities, improve the standard of living for our people and better compete in a challenging labour market for mariners. With over 1,000 new hires over the last 12 months, cancellations due to crewing shortages are down by 37%. These new compensation levels should only help continue that trend. #BCFNews Nearly 10,000 people participated in our Charting the Course public survey to help inform the future of the coastal ferry system. Based on feedback, #BCFerries will focus on five key areas to help inform the final vision: 👉 Service levels 👉 Pricing and demand 👉 Integration into the wider transportation network 👉 Reducing GHG emissions 👉 Our role in the movement of goods We have started to make progress in areas such as cancellations due to crew shortages which have dropped by 37% compared to last year as a result of the 1,200 crew hired over the past year. The four new Island Class vessels joining our fleet by 2027 and the seven new major vessels starting service by 2029 will add much needed capacity and create flexibility in replacing ships during refit or as mechanical issues arise. “The priorities people have raised are the same ones we put first every day, and I’m encouraged we have our focus in the right place. As an essential public service, we know there’s more to do and these results will be invaluable in guiding our decision-making as we shape our vision for the future.” – Nicolas Jimenez, President and CEO. Charting the Course will provide a vision for the coastal ferry system that keeps people, goods and services connected to the communities we serve. Following engagement with interest holders and Indigenous communities, the final vision is expected in early 2025. Learn more here: https://ow.ly/vbl250R3Krh

It has been a morning of connection and celebration on board the #IslandDiscovery sailing between Powell River and Texada Island. For the first time in #BCFerries history, every crew position on board was staffed by a woman, including the Master, Mate, Deckhands, Senior Chief Engineer and Engine Room Assistant. “I am proud to be part of the celebrations today. Not only are more women coming into the marine industry, but they're excelling in the marine industry. When there are women on the crew, it gives you an opportunity to support and be supported, and to share experiences that you’ve both had.” - Jodi, Senior Chief Engineer The theme for #InternationalWomensDay this year is #InspireInclusion. Today and every day, we're dedicated to supporting employment equity and diversity in the workplace. We're proud to recognize and celebrate all of the incredible women who work at #BCFerries Learn more: ow.ly/LaJ250QPbvG
