Anniversary Mingle a Huge Success
Posted on: January 18th, 2012
Over a hundred and twenty of Victoria’s brightest business professionals came out to Ambrosia Catering and Conference Centre to celebrate Prodigy’s 5th birthday on January 12th. Past Prodigy Group alumni, and even our founding Chair, came to celebrate and reminisce about what the Prodigy Group has achieved during our first five years.
The Honorable Kevin Falcon, Minister of Finance and Deputy Premier of BC, was our esteemed guest speaker for the night. The evening discussion revolved around the importance of small business and local entrepreneurship, especially during times of global economic uncertainty. It was noted that B.C. has a unique talent pool and the right political climate to create more jobs and stand out on the global business stage. Entrepreneurs were encouraged to use their local politicians and Chambers as resources to rally for more entrepreneurial support. The importance of networking as a key success factor in any business was also stressed. The night was filled with funny anecdotes, great insights, and big ideas for business in Victoria. As any good birthday party should, the Prodigy Group also served delicious locally-inspired appetizers and cake, generously donated by our host – Ambrosia Catering and Conference Centre. A big thank-you to Nando’s Chicken, Maximum Furniture, Sportball, and the Placement Group, for contributing such generous door prizes for the event.
With five years under our belt, The Prodigy Group looks forward to another year of connecting Victoria’s business leaders through our monthly mingles, special events, mentorship, and community charity initiatives. We are very excited to announce our next big event: the Amazing Race on April 21st, which is Prodigy Group’s take on a team-based, citywide scavenger hunt. Sign up for the Amazing Race will begin online shortly, so please check back soon. Happy 2012 Everyone! See you at our next mingle in February.

December Mingle @ Save on Foods Centre
Posted on: December 13th, 2011On December the 7th, Prodigy members attended a special Prodigy event hosted by the Save on Foods Centre, and the Victoria Royals. The event had a great turn out, and many members stayed after the mingle to enjoy a free Royals game, which was a Christmas gift from the Prodigy Group. The Royals lost the game, but everyone still had a great time mingling among Victoria’s leading professionals.
We have great crowds regularly attend our mingles and events, so we thought we’d get a more in-depth look into some of the business professionals whose are often amid the crowd. At our December 7th mingle, we talked with two business men about their small businesses in Victoria.
Dan Harsent was at the mingle representing My Ribbon Gift, and he was just in time for the holidays! My Ribbon Gift is a website that allows you to shop from home, or as Dan puts it, “in your underwear”. My Ribbon has Gift Certificates ranging from $35-$350, and allows the recipient to choose their own gift, which eliminates the chance that they’ll receive a gift they don’t like. Dan gave us an eloquent quote to sum up the company, “flowers die, chocolate goes to your hips, give the gift of choice.”
Chris Gillen was also at the mingle, representing Dial A Geek, a company that specializes in on-site computer, networking, and mobile phone service and repair. They offer everything from a simple, on-site and on-demand repair to a comprehensive and proactive outsourced IT solution for businesses and professionals. Dial A Geek focuses on small to medium businesses, and mingles are a great place to meet those companies! Chris spoke about how great it is to have so many small to medium businesses in Greater Victoria, and with such a variety of specialities. He swears that his techs never get bored because they visit such an array of different companies on a daily basis.

Posted on: November 15th, 2011On October 27th, we held our annual Appreciation Dinner for the Prodigy Group Mentorship Program, as a time to celebrate the success of our mentorship matches for 2011, as well as thank our mentors for all of their time and support they provided and continue to provide to our emerging business leaders. The Executive House Hotel hosted the night’s event, where we heard from special guest speaker Mel Cooper, and presented the appreciation awards to the mentors. A Leadership Nod from the House
Posted on: November 8th, 2011On Tuesday November 1st, the Prodigy Group as well as the Chamber of Commerce, were recognized by the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia. The Prodigy Group’s Chair Jesse Szczepanowski and past Chair Janell Karst met members of the house regarding opportunities for emerging leaders in our province.
“I’m pleased to announce several guests who are visiting the House today from the Greater Victoria Chamber of Commerce, along with a couple of members of what they call their Prodigy Group, which is the group of (emerging) professionals that acts as an adjunct to the Victoria Chamber of Commerce and introduces (emerging) professionals into the networking opportunities available through that organization” said the Hon. K. Falcon., Minister of Finance and Deputy Premier. “I would ask the House to welcome Bruce Carter, John Jurisic, Janell Karst, Jesse Szczepanowski and Dan MacLaren, who’s here from Prince George. Would the House please make them all welcome.”
Minister Falcon acknowledged the Prodigy Group’s efforts towards assisting the province’s emerging leaders; efforts that include partnerships and charitable donations to Junior Achievement and Community Micro Lending. The Minister also expressed a desire to work alongside the BC Chamber of Commerce to develop joint opportunities for collaboration with other BC Emerging Leader groups in the future. The Prodigy Group is honoured to have been recognized by the Minister in support of emerging leadership within the province.
